fascinating is that we came across was, romney had a mormon documentarian follow him around in the campaign. he was a friend of one of the romney sons. he had great access. he made a documentary about from the -- romney. in 2010, he showed it to the family, they love it. the staff said, we are not going to show this to the republic -- to the public. they thought it showed too much of him talking about made a docm his mormon faith in a way that they feared could turn off the public, which has some misconceptions about that faith. to me, that captured the attention in the romney campaign. the staff never wanted to talk about the candidate. they wanted to make it about obama and his handling of the economy. ultimately, that a lot obama and his campaign to define mitt romney and his campaign. host: and yet, he did talk about his mormon faith at the convention. other members that spoke about mitt romney, but that only happened at the convention. it did not happen in 30-second spots. did not move much beyond that. guest: the obama campaign did not understand what they were up to. they did not ant

mitt romney came on to the stage, he was able to moderate his positions, appeal to people in the middle of the country, as well as the people in the base who were excited to see him have a fighting chance and for a moment there, it did look like he was getting the upper hand in the election. >> number three, the 47% video that, that video of mitt romney saying there's a large portion of america who believe that they're victims. >> that was the devastating moment for the romney campaign and i don't think anybody who supports or was opposed to the romney campaign could argue that. it encapsulated a feeling that people had about mitt romney. the uneasiness about him and the way that he was perceived to feel about so much of the country and it really hurt him. it was helped in hurting him by the obama campaign and turning it in to a commercial. it went viral in so many ways and arguably the romney campaign never recovered from that, even with the first debate and president obama's failure to bring it up in that first debate with his pretty lackluster performance. >> number two, ranked wisco

. they lost house seats and senate seats and mitt romney rarely discussed the fiscal cliff. and we look back on the conversation and we think, gosh, it would have been nice if we had a plan that had been laid out, other than what mitt romney was saying, we're going to deal with this in a piecemeal fashion and we come to the table with that as a reality. nevertheless, why is anyone leaving down? why did the president leave town for his vacation, why did republicans start to leave town, why did democrats. if it is as serious as people say -- and i think it is, it would seem to me, even if the tea party is intransigent and that is what you want to say, they are terrible people and don't want to agree with anything, they are there and you have to deal with them, so everyone should stay in town, and can have their christmas eve dinner and do that, stay in town and figure this out and, the tea party, they believe in certain principles and they are fighting for them and think it is a spending problem, not a taking problem. i tend to agree with them, however bill's position is valid. republicans are

absolutely. he feels like he won a mandate and let's be clear, he won handily. he beat mitt romney handily in the election so he's walking away thinking he's got a mandate and that's why he's deeply dug in. the problem with that mandate is of course to say we want to -- he calls it a balanced approach. that is sort of a vague kind of campaign promise nobody really knows -- it's always sounding good but i don't think people are sure what it means. the problem is on the other side, with the republicans in the house, they have a mandate too. they won too. some of them won by larger margins and their mandate was the poms promises they made is they'll not vote to raise taxing for anyone. they'll fix the problem and stop spending and not raise taxes so they're in a bind when legislation comes to the house. they're not going to run in the street and stop anything that comes through. but they're not going to vote for something that raises taxes and that puts president obama and house republicans at loggerhead. >> i'm listening to what you say about the republicans and they have changed the limits,

? >> it has. you know, certainly the equities were discounting a romney victory back in november. got hit pretty hard afterwards. now the stocks are back to where it was prior to the election. in my view, there's not much more major harm that the epa and other regulation can do to the coal industry. but certainly as the economy dictates demand, electricity generation and more confidence, that will be more important than say the epa. the epa has done their damage for the most part. you can never say never but i think most of the negative news is behind coal for the epa. ashley: what companies do you like in particular? >> we talked about the thermal coal for electricity generation and metallurgical coal for steel. on the latter we look at alpha natural resources which is the largest exporter of metallurgical coal out of the united states, mass the most export capacity. on the thermal side the two names to be looking at -- ashley: you like these prices? >> yeah, they have come down quite a bit and we do anticipate a recovery in pricing over the next 12, 18 months for the commodities. and on

campaign rushed to talk about this as a political screen by mitt romney. and they didn't own up to the fact that there was a terrorist attack on 9/11. they didn't recognize it immediately as a terrorist attack. the media here have missed the story because we have allowed political reporters and not serious report -- reporters to conduct the investigation. >> some of those political reporters, they are serious people. finally what do you expect mrs. clinton will say she can get beyond this? >> i think that remains to be seen. we just don't know what secretary clinton knew, what she approved, did her political deputy protect her? did he keep information from her because he is a very political guy? clearly has been a loyal soldier to secretary clinton, so did he cover up? that's a huge question of whether or not her deputies kept things from her to protect her, or if she knew about these cables and she made the decision. we need to know these answers. >> those are the questions that the members of congress may or may not be asking when they have these hearings. rick, thank you for your time. h
